Antique & prewar automobiles

Preserve the story. Document the condition. Make the coverage questions specific.

Dark antique sedan with upright grille, round headlamps, and running boards.

Keep provenance and condition distinct

Begin with the vehicle's identity as supported by ownership records. Add known body, chassis and mechanical history, clearly separating documented information from family stories or previous descriptions. A historical account can be valuable context without being proof of every specification claim.

Record the car's present condition separately from its restoration history. Note whether it is running, displayed, stored or awaiting work. Recent photographs help describe what exists today.

Discuss touring and transport

Explain whether you expect to drive locally, join organized tours, attend multi-day events or transport the vehicle by trailer or commercial carrier. Ask about the specific activities and locations involved, including temporary storage away from home.

Do not assume a show invitation, club membership or historic registration establishes insurance permission for a particular activity. Confirm the intended use with the proposed insurer, and review separate transport arrangements when necessary.

Ask about specialist restoration decisions

Discuss how repair estimates, fabricated components and specialist labor would be evaluated. If the car is partially dismantled, identify where major components are kept and who is responsible for the work. Keep invoices and dated progress photographs accessible.

The restoration guide offers a stage-by-stage discussion checklist. For an operational car, our valuation guide helps distinguish an accepted insured value from a personal estimate. No age label alone determines coverage or the eventual settlement of a claim.
