Build a useful photo record of your classic car

The best record is one you can update—and find again when you need it.

Make the purpose clear

A vehicle photo record helps explain current condition and changes over time. It does not replace an appraisal, prove every originality claim or guarantee a settlement. Ask the insurer what photographs it actually requires for an application or value review.

As one example of program requirements, Hagerty's restoration guidance discusses photographs and restoration details. Requirements must be checked for the policy you are considering.

Use a repeatable sequence

Choose a safe, well-lit place and photograph the car in its present condition. A useful personal sequence includes each side, front, rear, interior, engine compartment and any significant features or existing damage. Take additional detail photographs where they clarify something the overview cannot show.

Do not crawl beneath an unsupported car or put yourself in traffic for a better angle. If underbody documentation is needed, arrange it with a properly equipped professional.

Label facts without embellishment

Name folders by date and vehicle. Add a short note describing what changed since the previous set, such as completed paintwork, a replacement interior or a change in storage location. Keep unedited originals.

Connect detail images with supporting invoices or records when available. A close-up may show a component, but it does not independently establish the component's origin or full history. Label uncertain information as uncertain.

Keep private information private

Maintain your complete record privately with appropriate access controls and a backup. Before posting an image publicly, check for visible addresses, documents, keys, security arrangements and other information you did not intend to share.

Send application records only through the channel confirmed by the representative. The initial quote form on this site does not accept photographs or documents. It is an introduction, not a secure document vault.

Update at meaningful moments

Create a new set after substantial work, before and after a major transport or storage change, and when preparing a value discussion. Preserve the earlier set rather than overwriting the history.

The restoration guide explains how to connect this record with project stages. The quote checklist helps you organize the wider conversation.
